Advanced Winter Awareness
The objective of Advanced Winter Awareness training is to practice what you learned in the Basic Winter Awareness course by participating in an overnight practical exercise in the field. This will help develop cold weather back-country competency and proficiency among Scout Leaders and older Scouts for leading winter treks, both short and long term. The emphasis is on developing an awareness of cold weather and wilderness skills so that winter wilderness travel can be conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner while feeling comfortable in fulfilling the leadership role.
Be prepared! Please bring your certificate of online training for Hazardous weather/youth protection. The entire session is taught in the backcountry. Bring suitable clothing, footwear, and equipment for winter outdoor activities. Bring lunch and snacks for two days. All other food will be provided.
We will meet at the Meese Snow park along Hwy 88, located West of Carson pass. A two-day Snow Park pass will be needed per vehicle.
*If the course is cancelled due to extreme weather, backup dates are 2/28/26-3/1/26.
Youth (14-years-old & 1st class or above) must be accompanied by a specified adult leader at a ratio of 1 adult for every 3 youth.
